Linux

The best, or pretty good encryption is to use pgp/gpg

Windows

  1. pgp/gpg is available for Windows too.
  2. Another convenient method is to use Winzip and specify encryption.
  3. For windows/cygwin, ccrypt is included. e.g. 
% cat myfile | ccrypt > myfile.cpt
