Distributions
A distribution is a way of, well distributing the code (software) that comprises it. Because it's open source, there are literally hundreds of choices that have appeared. The most recognized name is RedHat, which is a commercial distro.
Fedora a free derivative of the RedHat distro. I highly recommend it, because it's very mature and benefits from a long history of hard work.
Ubuntu a great distro for non-techies. It's based on Debian, one of the main branches like RedHat. It seems to be very good for those who are new to computers or those who realize how awful Windows really is.
Knoppix is my favorite distro that boots and runs from a CD or DVD. Can Windows do that?
